On Thursday 22nd May, the steamship Sir Walter Scott was re-launched into the waters of Loch Katrine from its winter mooring point on the slipway at Stronachlachar, at the western end of the loch. During the winter period an extensive programme of refurbishment and renovation work was carried out - including the installation of new boilers, thus enabling the ship to re-enter service as an oil-powered vessel, bringing to an end over 100 years of coal-burning service. Using biofuel to power the ship will mean a cleaner, and greener future for The Sir Walter Scott, whilst the renovation work carried out will guarantee its future operation, making it possible for many more passengers to enjoy the special experience of travelling on the legendary steamship.
The engineering and operational teams at Loch Katrine have been working closely with the principal contractors involved in the renovation project, including George Leslie (Barrhead), who were responsible for the reconstruction of the slipway, and Ferguson Shipbuilders (Port Glasgow), who carried out the work on the Sir Walter Scott.
The Summer timetable will come into operation from Saturday 21st June 2008. For further information and for reservations call (01877) 332000.
